Potsdam. The city many see as Berlin's little sister, as the two cities are next door to each other, but it has much more to offer than its proximity to Berlin. Potsdam is best known for its many beautiful castles that were home to the Prussian kings when the empire was at its strongest. The castles are now protected as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, making Potsdam a historic and delightful place in many ways.
For decades, Potsdam was part of the GDR and was also the site of the so-called Potsdam Conference in 1945, where the victorious powers of the Second World War met and decided how the country should be run. During this time and since, Potsdam has grown and is known locally mainly as a major university town, with its many educational centers, and for its film industry in nearby Babelsberg.
